Two Day Training For Student Gender        Champions of the Campus

Report on training program for Gender Champions held on 3rd- 4th February, 2016 at the SVP Institute of Kannada Studies. 

The Training program stated at 10.00 am on the 3rd of February, 2016. The inaugural session was presided by Prof. Sabiha, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies. The Resource persons of the two day training program Mrs. Meryln Martis and Mrs. Manjula Sunil inaugurated the program by lighting the lamp. Prof Mustairy Begum, Chairperson, SPARSH, Prof Kishori Nayak. K and Mrs. Preethi Dsouza, Nodal Faculty of Gender Champions of Mangalore University were present. 















The two day training program comprised of eight sessions. These sessions were majorly handled by Mrs. Meryln Martis and Mrs. Manjula Sunil. They were interactive sessions with active participation from all gender champions. On the first day there were 16 student participants and on the second day there were 12 student participants. 
The sessions conducted on day one were as follows:
Session 1: Understanding Gender – Sex and Gender- Equality  
Session 2: Gender Socialisation, Being Gender Sensitive
Session 3: Gender in Educational Institutions- Group Discussion
Session 4: Sexual Harassment: Forms and legal aspects
A single Performance play was done by MS.Pavithra Jyothigudde, followed by discussions and analysis by the participants. 
Session 5: legal aspects of different laws- Handout on POSCO act (Prevention of Child Sexual Offences), The protection of women from domestic violence act, The compulsory registration of marriages and other laws were given and discussed by the participants. 
The day ended with students having group discussions and preparing charts on the issues of gender sensitisation. 
The sessions conducted on day two were as follows:
Session 6: How to register complaints and awareness of help lines
Session 7: SPARSH activities and future plans. The presentation was done by Mrs. Preethi Keerthi Dsouza and Prof. Mustairy Begum was also present to give the briefings on the cell functioning. 












































Session 8: How to make Campuses gender sensitive and drawing up an action plan for the same. Students gave a short term and a long term plan of action which gender champions in the campus could do. 
The final suggestions given by students were as follows: 
Create awareness on gender champions in the campus by visiting classes and giving a brief introduction, distributing pamphlets, having street plays, conducting gender marathons.
The students sated that the number of gender champions must be increased and the representatives of all departments must be a part of it. Awareness of the same must be created in hostels too. 
The two day training session ended with the valedictory. The valedictory program was presided by Prof. Shashidhar R, Dean Faculty of Arts, Mangalore University. 



























Prof. Sabiha, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, the resource persons of the two day training program Mrs. Meryln Martis and Mrs. Manjula Sunil, Prof Mustairy Begum, Chairperson, SPARSH and Mrs. Preethi Dsouza, Nodal Faculty of Gender Champions of Mangalore University were present. 
The students were then given the participation certificates, a book on gender equity and the badges of Gender Champions. The program ended at 4.30 pm. 
The final suggestions given by students were as follows: 
Short term plans:
Create awareness on gender champions in the campus by briefing students in their respective classrooms 
Create a blog of Gender Champions
Create a face book account and create awareness on gender sensitivity
Make pamphlets on introduction to gender champions and distribute them to students in the campus of Mangalore University
Act out street plays and mime shows by gender champions in the university campus on issues of prevention of child labour, sexual harassment at the work place, human rights and many more issues
Conducting marathons in the campus on days like environment day, world aids day, women’s day etc. 
The students sated that the number of gender champions must be increased and the representatives of all departments must be a part of it (Minimum 8 students, 4 juniors and 4 seniors with equal representation from both genders). Awareness of the same must be created in hostels too. 
Long term plans:
Have a newsletter created by the gender champions of the university and circulate it on regular intervals
Have a study conducted in the campus as to how aware are students and staff on gender sensitivity issues
Make short telefilms to create awareness on gender issues
Have competitions for students like elocution, debate, quiz, poster making, paining and many more to create awareness on gender issues.
Visit the nearby government schools and create awareness on the POSCO act and many other human rights
Coordinate with the NSS students of various institutes and create awareness during the programs of the annual NSS camps
Coordinate with the NGOs and work on gender sensitization to create awareness
Other suggestions:
Gender studies to be included in the curriculum
Camps, trips programs to be conducted in and outside the campus
Special training to be given to staff, both teaching and non teaching on gender sensitisation
Special sessions for parents of the students on equal treatment of their children
Take the help of mass media in promoting awareness
